Not many days ago, I was listening to music for at least a half-hour on a music streaming platform. That half-hour was filled with various frames of my mind and much to my comfort, I was able to find a song for each one of them. Listening to them made me feel so good, I just closed my eyes and felt myself drift away to another world. This made me realise, I don’t give enough gratitude to things around me.

The other day, I was reading 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde. That book has consumed me in ways I never thought it would. Every line in the book was so well written, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for almost two days. This inspired me to read more of his books.

I’ve read a lot of good books, I’ve seen many good movies, I’ve had wonderful friends, but somehow, I’ve never paused to think about how they have uplifted me as a person and changed me for the better in various aspects of my life. I’ve never paused to say thank you for everything they’ve done for me. This has me wondering- am I taking all of this for granted? Am I not appreciating these things that I get to feel, enough? This thought also led me to think about little, everyday things I love to see and feel, like the sun rising, the fragrance of a perfume, the smell of an old book, the colours on a flower, the flow of the wind and so on.h

We often swoop past such ordinary things in life. We forget that they exist, and

only think about them when they aren’t at hand anymore. We forget to be grateful

for the run-of-the-mill things around us that exist now. We are so devoted to the

important tasks that we have to do on a daily basis that we forget to hold on and truly experience lighter things to the fullest.

Look around you. Listen to the birds singing. Look at the happiness on a child’s face when they see a park to play in. Look outside your window, at the butterfly flapping its colourful wings. Pay close attention to the lovely strokes of an artist’s masterpiece. When you wake up in the morning, embrace the fact that you’ve woken up alive, all ready to live the day to the fullest. Value and show gratitude to everything that raises your spirits.

Because if you understand its importance long after it has passed, it will be too late.

Don't let it pass.
